On 27 June 2018, Switzerland drew 2:2 to Costa Rica. This gave Switzerland a total of 5 points, placing it second in Group E, behind Brazil with 7 points. Brazil won 2:0 against Serbia in the other final Group E match. This sends Switzerland through to the next round.

At 90 minutes, Switzerland was set to win 2:1 before a rare penalty own goal equalised the score. Costa Rica’s Bryan Ruiz hit the underside of the crossbar, the ball ricocheted down, hit the back of Yann Sommer’s head, which sent it into the net.
Despite a disappointing finish, Switzerland still makes it through to the next round.
The Swiss team has now made it from the group stage in four of the last five football World Cups that it qualified for: 1994, 2006, 2014 and 2018. It failed to progress in 2010.
Switzerland’s next match will be against Sweden at 16:00 (Swiss time) on Tuesday 3 July 2018 in Saint Petersburg. Odds are fairly evenly balanced.
