According to Swiss Meteo, an unseasonal high pressure system is currently passing over Switzerland. Not good news for those hoping for snow, the system is likely to affect the weather between now and 1 January 2017.
The last three winters have brought strong anticyclones during Christmas. While this weather pattern is unusual compared to the last 20 years, it could be set to continue according climate forecasts, which show winters are tending to start later and finish earlier.
The following week starting 2 January is forecast to be much colder, but unlikely to bring much snow. Most precipitation will fall on northern Europe according to the second chart on this page.
Expected snowfall is modest and predicted between 2 and 4 January 2017. The sixth chart down on this page shows where it is expected and how much is forecast. Snow of between 4cm and 50cm is predicted for most of Switzerland.
