As part of the commemoration of world disability day Geneva’s giant broken chair found itself with a giant foot. The foot appeared on Monday last week. The chair, which has three good legs and one which appears to have been blown off in an explosion, symbolises opposition to land mines.

The 12 metre high chair was commissioned by Paul Vermeulen, co-founder and director of Handicap International and designed by Swiss artist Daniel Berset. The temporary sculpture built in 1997 has remained in place since, with a short break while the UN Palais des Nations was being renovated. Originally owned by Paul Vermeulen the chair was given to Handicap International in 2004.
Handicap International has 3,500 people located in 60 countries around the world. It was founded by two French doctors in Thailand in 1982.
