With his song “She Got Me”, Luca Hänni made it through to the Eurovision Grand Final in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Hänni, a 24 year old Swiss singer-songwriter, was born in Bern and taught himself to play guitar and piano at primary school. After school he worked as a bricklayer before giving it up to pursue a career in music. In 2012, he gained fame when he won the German song contest Deutschland sucht den Superstar.
Eurovision is an international song competition held primarily among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. Broadcasters from participating countries put forward performers singing original songs. The competing countries are mainly European, with a few non-European additions such as Israel, Morocco and Australia. 52 nations have competed at least once. The first contest, in which Switzerland competed with six other nations, was held in the town of Lugano, Switzerland, on 24 May 1956.
Winners are selected based on the results of a combination of public tele-votes and votes from a panel of judges made up of representatives from the competing countries.
The Eurovision Grand Final takes place on Saturday, 18 May 2019 at 21:00.
