AMOUREUX DE MA FEMME **1/2 (vo French)
Do men really fantasize so vividly when confronted with a lovely young creature of the opposite sex? It’s certainly amusing to see it happening to this poor fellow – played by Daniel Auteuil, also director of the film – who is trying to juggle his wife’s (Sandrine Kiberlain) distaste for the new girlfriend of their recently-divorced friend (a strangely subdued Gerard Depardieu), and his own wild daydreams about this glorious new addition to their uncomfortable foursome.
For that’s what this whole film is about – a forced dinner between three old friends and the new, disturbing arrival in their intimate circle. But above all, the dreams men can create for themselves when presented with an alluring young woman.
This sweet, muddled comedy moves between the actual dinner party and the momentary illusions of the enthralled host (Auteuil) who imagines himself in various romantic interludes with this new girl, played by the ravishing Spanish actress Adriana Ugarte, last seen in Almodovar’s “Julieta”.
Light fun.
