Parts of Switzerland were covered in snow this weekend as the snow line crept down to 900 metres in some regions. Appenzell-Innerrhoden had snow at this level, reaching 20 centimetres in depth in places.

According to Sharon Satz, from Meteonews, this is quite normal. “It snows at this altitude nearly every year in mid-October. It’s not exceptional” she said. However, the drop in temperature has been sudden. Two weeks ago temperatures were as high as 25 degrees in some places. A cold front from the north is behind the drop.
Other regions with weekend snow included Bivio in Graubunden (18 cm of snow), the 2,328 m Bernina Pass (15 cm of snow) and the 2284 m Julier Pass (13 cm of snow).
Parts of Neuchâtel and Bienne were hit by a hail storm at around 4pm on Sunday. This made roads slippery and caused a pile up on the A5 motorway near Thielle. Around 15 people received minor injuries.
