PAVAROTTI ****
Most people have heard of the great Italian tenor Pavarotti, many have heard him sing, but not many know about his background, his family, his character and his passions. The other one whom a few of us know – Ron Howard – the twice Oscar-winning director of such masterpieces as “Apollo 13” and “A Beautiful Mind”, has taken the task of opening up Pavarotti’s life to us.
As usual, it’s a brilliant job, as was Howard’s last documentary, “The Beatles – Eight Days a Week”.
He brings us the jovial tenor through his childhood, with his loving, supportive family and his singing father. We hear from his first wife and three daughters, his last young wife and little baby, his friends.
But above all, we get to hear his amazing voice, witness his generosity, his openness to the public and his charm. And of course the many celebrities he worked with, such as Placido Domingo and Bono, including his steadfast business managers and partners.
It’s a fascinating look into a life which was overflowing with love, admiration and talent. The most delightful moment is when the famous Three Tenors got together. That first jubilant concert will remain with you.
Run to it, whether you’re an opera fan or not.
