Both of these votes delivered firm “No” results.
Child benefit tax exemption
Only 24.6% voted “Yes” for the proposed tax exemption for child benefit payments. The voting difference between the city and the countryside was low with around 3% more rural “Yes” voters. French speaking “Yes” voters were only 7% ahead of voters in the Swiss German speaking region at 30% versus 23%. See the Confederation website for more detail.
Eco tax to replace VAT
This initiative was even more resoundingly rejected. Only 8.0% of Swiss voters voted “Yes”. The urban-rural difference was quite significant with 12% of urban dwellers voting “Yes” while only 6% of rural voters were in favour of it. Swiss German speakers at 9% were 3% more in favour of the proposal than Francophone Swiss. See the Confederation website for more detail.
