In Switzerland, on average, mothers gave birth to their children at the age of 32 in 2018. And, fathers were on average 35.1 years old, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
In 1990, on average, mothers gave birth to their children at the age of 28.9.
Switzerland’s fertility rate, or the average number of babies per woman, has barely changed in the 28 years since 1990. In 1990 it was 1.59. In 2018 it was 1.52. Women in Switzerland are not having significantly fewer children. They are just having them later.
The average age of marriage rose too, reaching 30 for women and 32 for men. In 1990, an average woman was 26 years old and an average man 29 years old when they first married.
Note: ages of mothers and fathers are for all children, not the firstborn.
