Meteo Swiss.
Yesterday, Meteo Swiss predicted snow, and this morning, many in Switzerland awoke to a sprinkling of white on the ground.
The main areas affected are central and western Switzerland, in particular the Alp and pre-Alp regions. The snow is the result of opposing high and low level air currents.
North of the Alps, cold air from the north has penetrated lower layers of air. This cold northern air has pushed moist warm air from the mediterranean higher turning its moisture into snow.
Normally, the warm air from the south produces a warm dry wind known as the foehn.
In affected areas the snow line will be between 400 and 600 m.
Above 800 m, snow could reach depths of 20 to 40 cms.
