From 1 June 2019, Swiss train platforms are to be smoke free, in theory at least. In practice the ban could take longer at some train stations, according to the news website Watson.
Implementing the ban involves creating designated smoking areas, something which will require more time in some locations, particularly at small regional train stops.
There are indications that new special smoking areas may not arrive until half way through next year at some stations.
Last year Swiss Rail trialled smoke-free platforms at six stations across the country before announcing it would extend the ban across all of its stations.
Smoking abstinence during the set up phase does not appear to be an option. Clean air champions have been waiting a long time for this change. It looks like they will need to breathe uneasily for some time longer on some train platforms.
The Swiss public transport union plans to provide further information on 4 June 2019.
