Recent statistics show there were 751,800 Swiss citizens living outside the country at the end of 2017, around 11% of the 6.3 million Swiss passport holders.
Most Swiss abroad live in France (26.1%), followed by Germany (11.8%) and Italy (6.6%). The chart below shows the top 20 countries.
Swiss abroad are on average younger than Swiss in Switzerland. The difference can be seen in this chart.
Certain countries, such as France, Germany, Italy and Austria fit the average for age distribution for Swiss living in a foreign country, as these charts show.
Some countries fit well outside the average age distribution. Swiss in Israel, and to a lesser extent the UK are far more likely to be young and far less likely to be old. On the other hand, Swiss in Thailand, and to a lesser extent Spain, are far less likely to be young and more likely to be old. In addition, in Thailand the average age of Swiss men is more than 10 years higher than that of Swiss women – see chart.
