Two Swiss universities made the top 50 in the times higher education 2018 world university ranking of 1,000 universities.
The ranking is described as the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, was ranked tenth overall. ETH has produced more than 20 Nobel Prize Laureates including Albert Einstein. In addition, it ranked first for computer science.
The second Swiss learning institution in the top 50 is École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). It was ranked 38th overall. EPFL was spun out of Lausanne University in 1969 to become a federal institute. It was ranked number one in the young university ranking. It also ranked well in computer science taking eighth position.
