A Swiss petition to ban Trump visiting fails to take off like the one in the UK.
A parliamentary petition in the UK attracted over one million signatures in a few days. By Sunday, 4 February 2017, over 1.8 million had signed it. UK parliament must discuss the issue and has scheduled to do so on 20 February 2017.
The specific wording of the petition is: “Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”
A similar petition in Switzerland posted on campax.org had only around 8,000 signatures by Sunday, 4 February 2017.
The wording of the Swiss petition is: “The selective exclusion of foreigners from predominantly Islamic countries by the Trump government is an unacceptable act against human dignity and religious freedom. I urge the Federal Council to take a firm stand against it and to inform President Trump that “You are a Persona non grata and therefore not welcome in Switzerland until further notice!”
8,000 represents 0.1% of Switzerland’s population. 1.8 million is close to 3% of the UK’s population. The UK petition website asks for a post code. This allows signers to be mapped. Anti-Trump sentiment is high in the cities, although this could be explained by population density.
