Remember the day in February 2009 when you heard about “the miracle on the Hudson”? About the pilot who safely landed a huge airliner in the Hudson river in Manhattan, with no casualties?! Well, that was Captain Chesley Sullenberger, a quiet, modest man with 42 years of flying experience, who became a hero to his passengers and the public at large. But not necessarily the airline and the safety experts. This is that factual story, directed by Clint Eastwood, with Tom Hanks as Sully.
It is told with discretion, from the freak accident caused by a flock of birds destroying both engines of the plane, to the taut investigations following the incident. Eastwood expertly navigates between a documentary feel, an homage to a real hero, and the brilliant rescue operation conducted by the New York authorities.
Tom Hanks is excellent as Sully, an honest, decent man who felt he was just doing his best. The beauty of the film is that the message is as modest as Sully.
