Ten years after the creation of the Cartooning for Peace network in New York by Kofi Annan and a dozen international editorial cartoonists, the Cartooning for Peace Swiss Foundation is organising a benefit concert at 20:00 on September 16, in the Victoria Hall in Geneva, in aid of cartoonists threatened all around the world for putting forward their talent and courage to support democracy, justice and human rights.
The foundation has published cartoons under a range of heading. Here is a selection, linking through to more on their website:
War and peace
Religion
Environment
New technology
Migration and borders
Freedom of expression
The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, under the direction of the Dutch conductor Antony Hermus, will perform Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Third Symphony (‘Eroica’), at 8pm. Chappatte and Plantu, both founding members of Cartooning for Peace, will draw live during the 4 movements of the symphony.
The money raised will be donated in its entirety to the Swiss Foundation support fund, created to help and defend cartoonists who are prevented from practicing their art in their countries, who are victims of political witch hunts, imprisonment or intimidation because they give free reign to their work.
The OSR musicians who are deeply attached to freedom of expression and artistic creation offered to play for free for the Cartooning for Peace Swiss Foundation as a gesture of solidarity with the murdered Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, gunned downed in Paris on January 7, 2015. They are therefore giving their support to a profession which has been put at risk in numerous countries.
The Cartooning for Peace Swiss Foundation is a recognised non-for-profit organisation. Its headquarters is at the Press Swiss Club in Geneva and Kofi Annan, holder of the Nobel Peace Prize, is its honorary president.
Tickets start at CHF 10.60. Book here.
