The Mayor of Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Stephan Rawyler, wants to merge all 26 communes in the canton of Schaffhausen into a single municipality. If the proposal is implemented Scahaffhausen would become the first Swiss canton to have only one municipality. The idea however, has not gone down well with some local residents and mayors of other municipalities in the canton. Stephan Rawyler says the current structure dating from the 19th century is outdated and leaves some small communities unable to cope. Opponents argue that such a merger would lead to the loss of local identity. Residents will get their say in the spring of 2016 when the proposal in completed.
