A global wealth report released by Allianz this week put the Swiss at the top. The average Swiss has EUR 146,540 of net financial assets. This puts them in first place ahead of the Americans with EUR 119,570. The UK is down in 10th position with EUR 63,490 per capita. Overall, the world was 9.9% richer in 2013 than in 2003, driven largely by strong recent stock market performance.
Not only have assets expanded but debt has also increased. In 2013 alone, global debts, including mortgages, increased by 2.3%, the fastest pace since the crisis. Switzerland also tops this list in Western Europe with per capita debt of EUR 75,490.
While by some measures inequality has increased, the report states that over the past 13 years, nearly half a billion people around the world have moved into the global wealth middle class, those with financial assets between EUR 5,300 and EUR 31,800.
