A poll commissioned by Swiss broadcaster RTS, suggests voters in the canton of Valais, the proposed site of Switzerland’s Winter Olympic bid, will reject the plan in the 10 June 2018 referendum.
in the poll, 58% were against or fairly against the 2026 bid, estimated to cost the canton CHF 100 million. A minority of 42% were for or fairly for the plan.
58% of those aged 18-35 were opposed, 60% of those 36-55 were opposed, compared to 54% of those over 55.
Women (68%) were more against the idea than men.
The leading reason for opposing the bid was the high cost (60%). CHF 100 million comes out at close to CHF 700 per household. This is in addition to the nearly CHF 1 billion estimated contribution by Switzerland’s federal government.
Those supporting the bid were most likely to support it for putting the canton on the world stage (33%).
The poll, conducted by Sotomo, surveyed 2,769 people between 11 and 18 May 2018.
