Today, voters in the canton of Zurich were asked whether marriage should be restricted to heterosexual couples. The cantonal initiative called “Schutz der Ehe”, which was put forward by the Federal Democratic Union party (EDU/UDF), was resoundingly rejected. 81% of voters were opposed to it.
On their website EDU said their fight to restrict marriage, the most important unit in a healthy society, to heterosexual couples continues. According to the Swiss broadcaster RTS, the Swiss People’s Party (SVP/UDC) was the only other party to support the initiative and the party, which they described as small right-wing evangelistic party.
Zurich’s cantonal government had advised voters to reject the initiative on grounds that marriage rules should be decided at a federal level.
