Running a red light on a bicycle in Geneva will cost you CHF 60. Riding on the footpath brings a fine of CHF 40.
Last week teams of police took to the city’s streets to issue fines. “We publicised our plan. We don’t want to surprise people”, officer Yann Oppeliguer, told the teams before they took to the streets last week, reported Tribune de Genève.
By the morning of 1 November, 143 penalties had been handed out. 92 were for running red lights, 35 for riding on streets closed to bikes, and 13 for riding on the footpath. Three were fined for riding with no hands on the handlebars, while busy on their phones.
The crackdown on cyclists follows a recent campaign in Geneva targeting those who drive into and block intersections.
