Swiss parliamentarians could soon be required to show any other nationalities they hold on the official parliamentary website.
The idea was supported by 15 members of a 22-member parliamentary commission looking at it, according to RTS.
The initiative was launched by Swiss People’s Party (UDC/SVP) member Marco Chiesa and has stated aim of improving transparency. However, seven of the commission’s members were opposed to the plan. Green party member Robert Cramer described the idea as discriminatory.
The initiative will now face votes in parliament and the upper house, the council of states.
In 2016, around 17% of Swiss citizens held more than one nationality.
In 2017, Ignazio Cassis gave up his Italian nationality ahead of his election to the Federal Council, a move that made headlines in Switzerland.
