A surprising number of the Swiss football team’s shirts were ripped in the match against France on Sunday evening. Why? According to Tribune de Genève there is a scientific reason.

The number of torn Swiss shirts came to seven. Mehmedi and Xhaka had to change their’s twice.
The reason stems from the type of fabric used by the German brand Puma. According to the newspaper Bild, the fabric includes a technology called PWR ACTV. Designed to provide muscular support and stimulate circulation from micro-massage, the silicon based fabric is also very elastic.
Other parts of the shirt, made from a mix of recycled polyester and elastane, are designed to increase breathability and whisk away sweat. The fabric may do all of these great things but as Sunday’s match showed, they’re far from rip proof.

The shirts are also used by English premier league teams such as Arsenal. Let’s hope Xhaka, who recently signed with Arsenal, has a large wardrobe.
