Bern-based Studium-Punctum.ch created this stunning two minute time lapsed montage of Switzerland’s capital city, Bern. Watching this it is easy to imagine how the city inspired Einstein to picture himself riding a beam of light.
One day in 1905, while working at the Swiss patent office in Bern, Einstein caught a tram. Looking back at Bern’s famous Zytglogge clock tower he wondered what would happen if the tram raced away from the clock tower at the speed of light. He quickly realised that the clock would appear stationery, since light would not be able catch up with the tram. The watch in his pocket however would continue to tick normally. This event inspired his theory of relativity.
