The Geneva Motor Show opens to the public today so many will already be rushing to see the new Ferrari 488. This car follows the Ferrari 458 and beats its predecessor on nearly all measures.
The new Ferrari is slightly lighter and produces more power from a smaller more fuel-efficient engine however with fuel consumption of 11.4 L/100 kilometres deep pockets will still be required to run it as well as own it. Here, in more detail is how the latest Ferrari 488 compares to its predecessor:
For those looking for lower emissions, head for the Honda FCV concept car. A zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle. It offers a driving range of close to 500 kilometres. Big progress has been made on the fuel cell. It is now one third smaller and produces 60% power per volume.
You will need to wait a while however before getting behind the wheel of one of your own. There are plans to produce it for the Japanese market in 2016. The rest of the world will have to wait even longer. It needs hydrogen to run and there is much work to be done to make hydrogen readily available. Like a lot of so called zero emission cars the car itself emits nothing but the fuel production process does. Electric cars are no different. How much are you saving the planet if your hydrogen is made from methane or your electric charge is coming from a coal-fired power station? Important questions to ask as these technologies develop.
Here’s a video explaining the Honda FCV concept car at the recent 2015 Detroit Auto Show.
